The Faces of Black History Month: Through the Eyes of the Boys & Girls Club

When you were a kid, who were your heroes? For years, we’ve asked kids at Boys & Girls Clubs across the country to draw their response to that question for our annual Black History Month Art Contest.

The submissions this year were as inspiring as ever. Not only for the artistic talent that the kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs put on display; but for the level of thought each artist put into choosing which African-American figure to honor.

“I am drawing Brandon Williams, a football player. Well, he helped foster kids,” said Brayden T., 5th Grade Student from the Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Missouri.

Here are just some of the amazing portraits that are currently on display for voting at select U.S. Cellular locations through the end of February. Which one’s your favorite?

“Black History Month gives our kids the opportunity to learn about everybody who has influenced African American history,” says Niki Kiruki, Director of Programs & Prevention, Boys & Girls Club of Springfield, one of the clubs participating in the program this year. “And really think about what their dreams are for the future and how they can help their community.”

A panel of judges from each Boys & Girls Club and local U.S. Cellular leaders selected the ten finalists’ artwork based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression.

“The artwork that the talented children from the Boys & Girls Club created is truly inspiring and is something we are greatly honored to host in our stores,” Deirdre Drake, executive vice president and chief human resource officer at U.S. Cellular, said. “This is a program that we look forward to all year and it is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Black History Month and the contributions black people have made to this country.”

Voting is open to anyone 18 and older until Feb 29 at U.S Cellular locations across the country. The top three finalists in each city will be announced in March and will be awarded a prize, including gift cards in the following amount:

  • 1St Place $250
  • 2nd Place $150
  • 3rd Place $100

Good luck to all the incredible young artists at the Boys & Girls Club of America and thank you for joining us for this year’s Black History Month Art Contest.
